Jr college teachers relaunch agitation

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, MAR 21: The Mumbai Junior College Teachers' Union (MJCTU), with 3700 member teachers in the city, will relaunch their agitation from Monday demanding revision of their payscale.

``We will be holding demonstrations at Azad Maidan in the afternoon. We demand that Chief Minister Narayan Rane announce the payscale accepted by us in front of Balasaheb at latter's residence Matoshree early this month,'' said Amar Singh, president of MJCTU.

However, the agitation will not affect the ongoing HSC examination by slow-down or blocking the assessment process. The teachers will also not boycott the practical examination, added Singh.

Earlier, the union had demanded a three-tier payscale of Rs 8000-Rs 10,000-Rs 12,000 which it scaled down to Rs 7,500-Rs 10,000-Rs 10,650 after meeting Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray. Though Chief Minister Rane was present during the meeting, later he announced a three-tier payscale (Rs 7,000-Rs 7,500-Rs 8,000) which was much less than what union had agreed to at Matoshree, saidSingh adding that the MJCTU is willing to negotiate with the CM on a compromise settlement, only if it has a ``logicalbasis''.

Meanwhile, 45,000-odd union members affiliated to the parent body, the Maharashtra Federation of Junior College Teachers' Organisation, will stage similar rallies at their respective district centres, Singh revealed. The teachers have threatened to take out a morcha to Matoshree on Sunday if the state government fails to listen to their pleas.

The MJCTU also plans to file a suit against the state government for bringing the junior college teachers under Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA). ``How can the state government bring us under ESMA which is a 24-hour service job condition?'' said Singh.
