Mumbai notes

Parsis usher in new year

Scores of Parsis today visited the fire temples scattered all over the city to usher in Jamshedi Navroze or the Parsi new year. The day, which marks the ascension of Emperor Jamshedji on the Persian throne, was celebrated with gaiety as Parsis bit into their favourite dhan dal with patra ni machi or sali boti and jardaloo in chicken, all rounded off with pure dairy products like sagani ni bhoi and matka dahi. The well-decorated navroze table, with the traditional symbols of goodwill and omen, incuding dry fruits, plants, gold fish, Persian tea and sweets, also occupied a place of importance in many Parsi homes. A special entertainment programme was also held in Central Mumbai to revive the old forgotten Parsi traditions.--PTI
