Man strangles wife, then makes it look like accident

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, March 21: A man allegedly strangled his wife with her sari, while driving home last night. He later crashed the car into a tree on the Najafgarh road in Nangloi to make it look like an accident.

The police say they received an accident call around 11 pm last night. ``On our way to the spot, the policemen on duty with the PCR van which called us, stopped us and said the couple were in hospital and we should go there,'' said H.K. Singh, additional SHO of Nangloi.

At Shubham Medical Centre, the private hospital, where Manjit Singh had brought his wife Seema, they found that the woman had died in the accident. The doctors on duty, however, told them another story. ``They told our officer that the nature of injuries were not the kind which were seen in an accident. They said there were ligature marks on the neck of the woman which indicated that she had been strangled,'' said Singh.

Singh rushed to the spot and inspected the car and also spoke to the doctors. Apart from a broken indicator, there was no sign of accident on the car, which made them suspicious. They immediately took Manjeet into custody and questioned him at length.

After sustained questioning, Manjeet confessed that he and his wife had never got along. She apparently had a heart problem and he used to frequently say that he would not have married her if he had known about her health problems. She in return would taunt him by saying that if she had known that his brother had been murdered after he had molested a woman, then she would also not have married him. On their way back from a temple in Najafgarh yesterday, they fought. Manjeet strangled her with her sari.
