TN brave mishap, beat Maharashtra

Jaipur, March 21: Services men and Tamil Nadu eves won their classification matches today to finish third in the National basketball championship here.Services, who started the tournament on a high note, were given a tough time by Tamil Nadu in a tantilisingly close tie here before winning 60-57. Tamil Nadu men led 36-30 at half-time, but Services turned the tables on changing ends to scrape past in the 49th edition of the championships.

Tamil Nadu women, after surviving a road accident in the morning, beat Maharashtra 65-53 to take the third position. The TN women were travelling in an autorickshaw which turned turtle but all escaped unhurt and reached the Sawai Mansingh Stadium Complex in time for their match.

After their 61-39 drubbing by Bihar in the semifinal yesterday, Services men kept their nerves despite trailing 30-36 at the halftime. Six of the TN girls sustained minor injuries but decided to play the tie against better-rated Maharashtra and surprisingly emerged winners.

Men (third place):Services 60 (Phool Singh 19, S Kadam 16, SN Rao 13, S Francis 9) bt Tamil Nadu 57 (AD Suknaeshwar 21, V Saravanan 10, Sridhar 9) HT 30-36; Women (third place): TN 65 (Vidhya Sridharan 17, Kaushika 20, Shyamla 9) bt Maharashtra 53 (Pradnya Mane 17, Manisha Khaprekar 18) HT 31-22.

player hurt: Kerala hoopster Jetty Jose got hurt after falling from a moving mini bus. She was admitted to the neurology ward of the Sawai Man Singh Hospital. Doctors said Jetty was out of danger and will be discharged tomorrow. She will miss the finals.
