Stone-pelter nabbed, says he did it to vent frustration

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, March 24: Presence of mind of a commuter and alertness of the Government Railway Police helped nab a 25-year-old from Dharavi who hurled a stone at a Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus-bound fast local train between Sion and Matunga stations.

At 10.15 am today, Government Railway Police constables patrolling the central railway tracks in the area spotted Santosh Shankar Shinde, a hutment dweller, hurl a stone at the Kalyan-CST fast local which injured Pankaj Chandulal Engineer, a 45-year-old businessman from Dombivli.

``He was so nonchalant that he just stood there after hurling the stone as if nothing had happened. But when he saw the GRP men running in his direction, he panicked and started running away,'' said Senior Inspector of Dadar Railway Police Station M S Sangle. Eventually he was nabbed after a short chase.

All this while the injured commuter, Pankaj Engineer, who was struggling to cling to the doorway of the compartment after being hit had the presence of mind to register the face of hisattacker.

``The entire incident happened within a few seconds between Sion and Matunga. After nabbing Santosh we took him to Dadar station where Pankaj was giving his statement to the police and immediately identified the culprit,'' said Sangle.

Santosh reportedly confessed to the police that he used to occasionally throw stones at fast local trains to vent his frustration with his continued state of unemployment. More drama followed when Santosh's parents who live with him at Subhash Nagar, Kumbharwada in Dharavi, came to the police station and pleaded with the police to let their son go free as he was ``a victim of this society.''
