Woman `killed' for dowry

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
LUDHIANA, MARCH 24: Simmi (28) became a victim of dowry when she died here at the Christian Medical College on March 22. After her family alleged that she had been poisoned by her husband and mother-in-law, the police have registered a case under Section 306 of IPC against Sanjay Kumar and his mother, Bimla. The accused are absconding.

According to Simmi's father, C.L. Arora, a resident of Panchkula, Simmi, who was married to Sanjay of Naulakha Modern Colony in 1994, was regularly harassed by her husband and mother-in-law. On March 21, the family allegedly demanded a car and a motorcycle from her father. "We managed to pacify them and they promised that they will not maltreat Simmi. When I reached back home, we received an anonymous call that Simmi had been admitted to the CMC. We rushed back and in the meantime she conveyed to my brother that she had been poisoned by her husband and her mother-in-law,'' a distraught Arora told ENS.

Simmi died in the early hours of March 22 and has left behind two sons aged three-and-a-half and one-and-a-half years, respectively.
