Suraj Gorkha to celebrate 150th Raising Day

CHANDIGARH, MARCH 24: Suraj Gorkha, 5th battalion of Jammu and Kashmir Rifles would celebrate its 150th Raising Day on March 28 and 29, this was stated here today by an Army spokesperson.

Deliberating on the battalion's achievements, he said the battalion while participating in Operation Riddle during 1965 in the Western sector attacked Pakistani forces at Chawinda and later captured Alhar railway station in Sialkot sector.

Suraj Gorkha was raised in 1849 by Maharaja Gulab Singh, the then ruler of Jammu and Kashmir. The battalion carved a niche for itself during 1947-48 Jammu and Kashmir operations and was awarded battle honour.

In its various operations against the militants, the battalion apprehended over 150 of them and recovered over 75 weapons, he said.
