GANDHINAGAR, March 24: A resolution seeking to repeal the Urban Land (Ceiling and Regulation) Act from Gujarat was introduced in the State Assembly on Wednesday. With this, the government has sought to do away with the ULCA now in force in six major cities of Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, Rajkot, Bhavnagar and Jamnagar. Endorsing the opposition's suggestion, the ruling party agreed to have a full-day debate on the resolution in the House on March 30.Moving the resolution in the House, State Revenue Minister Vajubhai Vala said "it is expedient to repeal the Act from Gujarat, so that land in urban areas may be available for proper utilisation and for reviving the stagnant housing activity in the State."
He said as per the guidelines laid down by the Government of India, the State government was also considering a proposal to impose tax on vacant land in urban areas to persuade land holders to use their land and also provide financial assistance for housing schemes for economically weaker section of the society and low income groups.
The minister told the House that the government, by seeking to repeal the ULCA, was committed to provide housing to the weaker sections of the society and develop infrastructure facilities such as water, drainage, sanitation, roads etc.
