Employ road sense
S Basu
This refers to the photograph of a Tata Sumo perched atop the boundary fence of the Konark Residency Society in Koregaon Park, which appeared on March 13. It, however, needs to be pointed out that the report accompanying the photograph was totally erroneous since the Tata Sumo, according to local reports, did injure two pedestrians, who were rushed to the nearby Inlaks & Budhrani Hospital. The incident can very well repeat itself if the site of the accident is not studied and necessary action not taken by the Pune Municipal Corporation. It may be noted that the carriage width of the road in front of the society is severely reduced due to the following reasons: the unfinished part of the road next to the footpath on the side of the vegetable vendors was left undone by the Pune Telecom department after their digging project; the three-wheeler of the vegetable vendor is perpetually parked there; the auto-rickshaws at the stand near the crossing invariably park ahead of the crossing. The above situation is aggravated by the fact that on such a narrow road, the vehicle flow rate increases every day, the traffic is two-way and vehicles like the Tata Sumo move at a terrific speed. To make life safer for people at this part of Koregaon Park, the following needs to be done: The road needs to be put back in order. The road should be marked a `No Parking' zone on both sides. The auto-rickshaws should be forced to park properly. If possible, introduce two speed-breakers.For the safety of North Main Road, considering the increasing traffic everyday, it is high time the road was made one-way from east to west in the morning and west to east in the evening.
