Central Govt doesn't depend on Cong for survival -- Thakre

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
BHOPAL, MARCH 26: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Kushabhau Thakre today said partners of the ruling coalition at the Centre were united, adding the Congress would not succeed in toppling the Government as it did not depend on the Congress for survival.

The Congress had toppled four governments in the past including that of Chandrasekhar, H D Deve Gowda and I K Gujral, but they all were dependent on the Congress for survival, Thakre told a press conference here.

When the Vajpayee Government was formed a year back, there was some uneasiness between the BJP and its allies, but with the passage of time, they had come closer, he said. The Government was gradually moving towards stability, the BJP chief added.

The allies did not agree with many of the BJP's views and the party did not accept some of its partners' policies, but while voting in Parliament they were united, he said.

The unity between the BJP and its allies was demonstrated during the voting on the President's Rule in Bihar in the LokSabha, where allies who were against the use of Article 356 also voted for the Government, Thakre pointed out.

``They (the allies) have their own problems and we have ours,'' Thakre said. but added that both the BJP and its partners in Government needed each other.

Thakre asserted that the BJP did not fear that the allies would do anything during the current Lok Sabha session to bring about the Government's downfall.

Asked if the BJP had succeeded in giving an able prime minister and a stable government as promised by it before the Lok Sabha polls, he said, ``There is no doubt that Vajpayee is an able prime minister and his government is moving towards stability''.
