NEW DELHI, March 26: Bhupinder Dhawan has been appointed coach for the senior women's team for the Asian Powerlifting Championship to be held in New Delhi from April 1 to 5. Dhawan has the distinction of guiding India to third position in the Junior World Powerlifting Championship in 1994-95.India will be represented by a strong contingent of 42 lifters. Hinting at the composition of Indian women's team, Dhawan informed that it has stars like Sarla Shetty, gold medallist in Asian championships, Rooma Pal and Rajrajeshwari, gold medallist in Junior World Championship. However, the Indian team will be announced shortly after the conclusion of the ongoing trials. Meanwhile, Indian Gym Federation has appointed Mrs Saggar, Pooran Singh and Ms Ranjit Gill as its additional office-bearers.
Saxena, Bhardwaj make it to final
K G Saxena (RBI) and DK Bhardwaj entered the final of the sixth inter-bank men's single badminton tournament at Karnail Singh Stadium here today, beating Sudhakar Sharma (PNB) 15-13, 13-15, 15-1 and Khushwinder Singh (PSB) 10-15, 15-13, 15-8, respectively.
In men's doubles, Pathania/Madan of PNB beat Pritpal/Khushwinder of PSB 15-4, 15-3. In carrom team championship, Punjab National Bank clinched gold beating RBI. PK Manchanda (PNB) beat DS Rawat (RBI) 11-15, 25-8, 25-12; Rajesh Sharma (PNB) prevailed over Rajesh Kumar (RBI) 25-0, 25-21 while TK Sarkar (PNB) beat Ramesh (RBI) 25-23, 16-25, 25-10). In chess, Moti Ram (SBOB) bt Manohar Lal (BOB); Raminder Bir Singh (SBOB) drew with LK Arora (All. Bank); BK Baweja lost to R Malhotra (OBC); Lalit Narang (BOI) beat AK Nigam (RBI) while Chaman Lal (Sy. Bank) beat SK Verma (Sy. Bank).
