Harmeet Kahlon top-seeded

CHANDIGARH, MARCH 26: Defending champion and Arjuna awardee Harmeet Kahlon of Chandigarh has been topseeded in the 98th Amateur Golf Championship to be played at the Chandigarh Golf Course from March 29 to April 4.

Releasing the seedings, G K Kochar, chairman, Media and Publicity, Chandigarh Golf Club said that Digvijay Singh and Amit Luthra have been given second and third seedings. Vaqas Ahmed, a promising golfer from Pakistan, is the eighth seed while seedings for Sri Lankan players will be announced after they report here. A three-member Sri Lanka team is arriving tomorrow.

More than 67 players from all over the country are expected to take part in the championship. It is for the first time in the histroy of the championship that it is being played in Chandigarh. Earlier the championship was exclusively played at Calcutta up to 1958 when the venue was shifted to Delhi for the first time and thereafter to Mumbai in 1964 and to Bangalore in 1997. The venue alternates between Calcutta, Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore.

According to the media and publicity committee chairman, the Amateur Golf Championship enjoys the status of the national meet.

India's ace amateur golfer Harmeet Kahlon is confident of retaining the title. ``I will be playing on my own course, before the home crowd and in my own city. Inspiration will come from all quarters,'' said Harmeet.

INTERNATIONAL MEET: The Chandigarh Golf Club will also host to the International Team Championship to be played on March 28 and 29. Besides, two Indian teams, golfers from Pakistan and Sri Lanka will also compete. Vaqas Ahmed and Ahmed Ali Shah are from Pakistan.

Meet postponed
The Chandigarh State junior handball championship, which was scheduled to be held here today at DAV School-8 has been postponed due to unavoidable circumstances.

According to a member of the Chandigarh Handball Association, the meet will now be organised in the second week of April.
