Relief ordered for rape victim

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
Cuttack, March 30: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the Orissa Government to pay an interim relief of Rs 25,000 to Tulasirani Das, a victim of alleged gangrape at Soro in Balasore district.

While directing the chief secretary to submit a report on it, the NHRC said a field investigation by the commission team on her complaint had revealed that there was substance in the allegation.

The NHRC in its recent letter had also said that there prima facie case of dereliction in duty and inaction in the case by the local police.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court, acting upon a petition of Tulasi Rani (35) has directed the Orissa High Court to treat it as a public interest petition.

She was gangraped on July 8, 1995 while her husband was undergoing treatment at the local hospital.
