Dy Speaker's poll put off
Gandhinagar: The BJP and the main Opposition Congress failed to reach an understanding over the Deputy Speaker's election during the budget session of the State Assembly which was prorogued on Tuesday. The internal bickerings within the BJP appear to have forced Keshubhai Patel to defer the election till the next session.

Hike opposed
Vadodara: The Vadodara Shaher Vyapari Mandal has opposed the proposed hike in octroi schedule charges by half per cent on silk, polyester and other cloth. In a memorandum submitted to Municipal Commissioner G R Aloria, the Mandal said because of the hike, less cloth would come in the city, which would affect the VMC's revenue in form of octroi.

Speaking contest
The Air Force Wives' Welfare Association of Vadodara conducted a public speaking contest for school children here on Tuesday. Topics included `Can India and Pakistan Unite', `Vadodara Traffic - A Chaos', `Who to Blame - Police or Common Man.' Air Commodore P P Rajkumar, Air Officer Commanding of the Air Force Station, Vadodara, presided over the function.

Demolitions
The VMC on Tuesday removed four large unauthorised hoardings put up on private premises on the VIP Road Circle in Karelibaug. According to information, the hoardings were put up in violation of VUDA norms.

Panguni Uthiram
The 27th Panguni Uthiram festival of Sri Subramanyaswamy Devasthanam on Station road in the city will be celebrated with much religious fervour on Wednesday. Lord Sri Subramanyaswamy will be taken out on a flower bedecked rath from Akota around 8-00 in the night accompanied by nadaswaram concert.
