Women say they were threatened

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
SURAT, March 30: Tension gripped Dediapada taluka in Bharuch district following complaints by two tribal women that a group had stormed into their houses and asked them to revert to Hinduism or face dire consequences a couple of days ago.

Manjiben Vasava, of Moskut village and Goraben Vasava, of Borsan village, in complaints to Dediapada police, said a group had come to their houses and asked for their husbands who are leaders of Christians in the villages.

Mangiben alleged that some six persons questioned her why she was following Christianity and threatened to set her on fire if she did not reconvert. They tore a picture of Jesus Christ and asked her replaced it with that of Lord Hanuman. Before driving away in a four-wheeler, the group again threatened her, Mangiben said, adding the same group had met her on Monday morning and told her that they were from Vadodara.

Apparently, the same group went to Borsan, some five km away, and asked for Gora's husband. They asked her if she was forced or given incentives to embrace Christianity. They also asked her to re-embrace Hinduism or face consequences, and fled after neighbours came to her rescue, Goraben claimed.

No arrests were made yet, police said, adding they had seized a vehicle allegedly used by the group. They said there had been an altercation when a group was propagating their faith.

Meanwhile, Vishwa Hindu Parishad's (VHP) international general secretary Pravin Togadia is expected to visit Dediapada on Thursday to open a school started by the parishad as part of its plan for a series of such schools in the rural areas to counter Christian missionaries.
