Opposition walks out of Assembly

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
GANDHINAGAR, March 30: The Congress walked out of the State Assembly today in protest against the "BJP Government depriving Opposition members of the privilege to raise public interest issues during zero hour."

Raising a point of order, Udesinh Baria of the Congress complained that the BJP had, throughout the budget session, deprived the Opposition of the privilege in clear violation of the traditions of the House.

Congress Chief Whip Naresh Raval said he wanted to raise the issue of Ahmedabad violence on the eve of Bakri Id and the state of affairs in Gujarat University. But, the ministers concerned did not allow it.

Leader of the Opposition Amarsinh Chaudhary complained that BJP members were being allowed to raise issues during zero hour, while the Opposition was was not. "Either the tradition of having zero hour be scrapped or the Opposition be allowed to have this privilege," he told Speaker Dhirubhai Shah. This prompted Parliamentary Affairs Minister Suresh Mehta to charge that the Opposition was pressurising ministers to allow members to raise questions during zero hour to "extract political mileage". This irked Chaudhary who demanded that either Mehta withdraw his remarks or the Speaker get the remarks expunged.

Amidst the din, the Speaker said," I can't permit any member to raise question during zero hour unless the minister concerned agrees to do so. Besides, no Opposition member has drawn my attention to any minister refusing him to raise any issue".

At this juncture, Congress member Jashu Barad rose to feet and vociferously condemned Suresh Mehta's remarks against the Opposition, saying, "it is not befitting the stature of a senior minister like Mehta". When Mehta refused to withdraw his words, the Opposition walked out and returned after a few minutes.
