Easy victories for seeded golfers

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHANDIGARH, March 30: As expected everything went according to the script on a warm and sunny day as most of the seeded golfers moved into the second round of the 98th Amateur golf championship being played at the Chandigarh Golf Club.

Top-seed Harmeet Kahlon made most of the home course to beat KS Brar (14th hole) in the match play. Digvijay Singh and Amit Luthra, who are placed No 1 and 2 in the meet also humbled their opponents to enter the second round.

Digvijay made short work of Jujhar Singh (11th hole) while Amit Luthra accounted for Navjot Mann (17th hole).

However, the match between Sandeep Sayal and Rajiv Kumara was a close contest and in the play off, the former emerged the winner.

The day, however, belonged to the 19-year-old local lad Vikramjit Singh, who played excellent golf to beat Amish Jaitha (15th hole).

The two Pakistani golfers in the fray Ahmed Ali Shah and Vaqas Ahmed also scored victories over their respective opponents to keep their hopes alive for contention.

The Sri Lankan Anura Rohana also defeated Wazir (13th hole) to sail in to the second round. Another local lad Gurbaaz Mann, however, had to bow out of the meet when he lost to Suman Puri. He had eagle at the 13th hole.
