Bhagwat's pension won't be stopped, says PM

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PANAJI, April 1:Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee has said that charges levelled against Admiral Vishnu Bhagwat did not merit a punishment more severe than a dismissal and said that the former naval chief would not forfeit his pension.

Vajpayee, speaking to newsmen here on Thursday, also said that those demanding a JPC probe against Defence Minister George Fernandes should substantiate their charges first.

Strongly hitting out at various politicians for the furore over Bhagwat's sacking, he said, ``Same allegations are being repeated without being backed by evidence.'' He felt that the Opposition parties actually did not have any evidence at all to substantiate their charges. The Prime Minister informed that the Bhagwat affair must be ``discussed thoroughly in Parliament before the appointment of JPC to probe the issue is considered''.

The National Executive Committee of the BJP which is meeting here in Goa will review the political situation in the country and formulate the strategy for theforthcoming Assembly elections in four states. Of the 156 National Executive members of the party, 140 members are expected to participate in the meeting.

BJP vice president and spokesman J P Mathur said that the party would review the Government's decision on the nuclear blasts, the PM's Lahore bus trip and others. He added that the meet would assess the party's performance in various fields and attempt to identify the strengths and weaknesses.

The party, which is holding its meet on the eve of the Assembly elections, hopes to wrest a majority in the 40 member House. The BJP which will take the Congress head in Goa and outside, it is expected to position itself as a principled party after the re-installation of the Rabri Devi Government in Bihar with Congress support.
