April 1: Mumbai University Vice-Chancellor Snehalata Deshmukh today met Chief Minister Narayan Rane to reportedly brief the latter on the MBBS marks scandal even as the matter now rests with Governor P C Alexander for disposal. The unscheduled meeting, at the request of the vice-chancellor, comes a day after the Board of Examinations of the university decided to leave it to the governor whether or not to revoke the eight grace marks that were granted across the board to all final year students in the social and preventive medicine paper.
It is not clear, however, why Deshmukh chose to brief the Chief Minister on the row especially after maintaining right through that the state government had no role in resolving the row since the university was a autonomous body. The university refused to cooperate with the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) after Health Minister Daulat Rao Aher empowered MMC to probe the scam.Only a few days ago, the Governor's office had expressed its displeasure at Deshmukh publiclydefending the university's decision after he, as Chancellor, had questioned it in a show cause notice.
The meeting also comes at a time when student bodies like the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and National Students Union of India have demanded her resignation on moral grounds.
