Hike in milk prices protested

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
VADODARA, April 1: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will take out a rally on Saturday to protest against the hike in milk prices by the Vadodara District Co-operative Milk Producers' Union (Baroda Dairy).

As the prices of Sugam brand Shrikhand and ice-cream increased on Thursday, the resentment among a section of the society gained momentum with several people from a cross-section of society and city BJP leaders convening a meeting at the office of MLA Yogesh Patel in the evening.

Denouncing the hike in milk prices, the meeting decided to take out a rally on Saturday. A memorandum will be submitted to District Collector Anil Mukim.

Presiding over the meeting, city unit BJP chief Bhupendra Lakhawala called on the citizens to continue their non-violent agitation until the Dairy withdrew the hike. Patel described the hike as unilateral, while former Mayor Shabdsharan Brahmbhatt called upon the citizens to take the agitation to every nook and corner of the city and compel the Dairy authorities to withdraw the hike.

The dairy had hiked milk prices by Re 1 per litre a few days ago. Regarding a possible hike in other products, Dairy Managing Director Ravindra Mathur had said that it was necessary as the raw material had become costly and that the transportation cost to get milk from other cities was more.

Meanwhile, in a statement on Thursday, members of the City Youth Congress questioned Mathur's statement, pointing out that milk was being brought from other cities for several years so why the sudden need to hike the prices.

The statement further said that the Youth Congress has given a week's time to the Dairy to withdraw the hike.
