Rajput gets bail

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHANDIGARH, April 1: Human rights lawyer D. S. Rajput, accused of being involved in the alleged jail-break conspiracy case, was granted bail by the Punjab and Haryana High Court here today.

Pronouncing the orders, Justice M. L. Singhal observed that keeping in view the incarceration of the petitioner for seven to eight months, he should be allowed bail, particularly when there was no prospect of the trial concluding in the near future.

Rajput was earlier booked by the Punjab Police under Section 124-A, 153-A, 225-B, 511 and 120-B IPC. He was allegedly involved in the jail-break conspiracy reportedly unearthed by Chandigarh Police with co-accused Satnam Singh's arrest on June 11.

According to the prosecution, PETN explosive, to be smuggled into the jail complex, was recovered from Satnam Singh's possession. More explosive was recovered from his residence at Salimpur village, in Ropar district.

The explosive, the prosecution had added, was to be employed for blowing up a portion of the jail complex for enabling former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh's alleged assassins, Jagtar Singh Tara and Jagtar Singh Hawara to escape.

The petitioner had also been booked by the Chandigarh Police. He, along with human rights activist Jaspal Singh Dhillon and nine others, had subsequently been charged by the UT Additional District and Sessions Judge with ``unlawfully'' and ``maliciously'' conspiring to cause an explosion at the Burail Jail.

Claiming to have been implicated in the case, Rajput, in his bail plea, had stated that police personnel in Punjab had been annoyed with him as he had been filing cases against them in the court.
