Opp knives into CM and her birthday cake

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, April 1: It wasn't quite a cake-walk for Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit in the Assembly today, when an Opposition member, not wishing let go of the point, criticised her for showing disrespect to the national flag. And all due to an innocuous birthday cake.

The issue was raised during the Question Hour by BJP MLA Nand Kishore Garg. Along with other members of the Opposition, Garg accused the Chief Minister of insensitively cutting across the national Tri-colour and the Ashok Chakra on her birthday cake, that too with a knife!

``Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has cut a cake on her birthday which was an exact replica of our national flag. It had the Tri-colour and the Ashok Chakra which she cut with a knife. It is unthinkable that a chief minister of Delhi should do such a thing and show disrespect towards the national flag,'' Leader of Opposition Jagdish Mukhi said dramatically, demanding a written apology from the CM.

Celebrating her 61st birthday yesterday, Dikshit had, indeed, cut a huge cake in the shape of the national Tri-colour, complete with an Ashok Chakra, with much fanfare in the presence of her Cabinet colleagues, MLAs, representatives of various government organisations and party workers.

But, she clarified, she took the utmost care to avoid cutting the Tri-colour on the cake. And that she did not intentionally or unintentionally show any disrespect towards the national flag.
