Cong dares Govt to introduce Women's Bill

N D SHARMA
BHOPAL, April 1: All-India Mahila Congress president Ambika Soni on Wednesday dared the BJP-led Government at the Centre to bring the Women's Reservation Bill for a discussion before the House. The Congress, she said, was for passing the Bill at the earliest. In fact, it was under pressure from the Congress that the Bill had been introduced in Parliament, she added.

Speaking to mediapersons after addressing a two-day training camp of the state Mahila Congress, Ambika said the Congress favoured passing of the Bill providing 33 per cent reservation to women. ``We don't want to divide women among sub-divisions,'' she replied, when asked about her party's stand on reservations within the reservations.

She said that the Mahila Congress, last year, had collected and submitted 16 lakh signatures 1.4 lakh from Madhya Pradesh alone of women in support of the Bill. The Mahila congress had decided to take up a programme of literacy on a large scale this year, she said. Each one of those who had signed the memorandumfor women's reservation last year would be expected to teach at least one person this year, she added.

Addressing the Mahila Congress training camp, Ambika exhorted women not to hesitate in launching an agitation against the government demanding an end to atrocities on women, irrespective of which party was in power.Chief Minister Digvijay Singh, who also addressed the camp, however, assured: ``We have made arrangements to sternly curb atrocities on women.''
