Shivajians inch closer to title

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, April 1: Shivajians aided by second-half strikes took a step closer to the PDFA I-Division League title with a facile 2-1 win over an error-prone Roopali Sports Club at the Ammunition Factory (Kirkee) Stadium, here today.

The winners, with a match in hand, enhanced their Super League points tally to six from two wins, while Roopali, who suffered their second loss today, are still pointless.

After a casual first-half, Shivajians struck via Dal Pau (56th minute) and Newman (73rd), while Bapu Raikar (77th) pulled one back off a penalty-kick.

Occasional forays interspersed with several miss passes dominated the first half proceedings. Roopali were the ones who took quite a bit of time to settle and often committed silly mistakes, which fortunately was not capitalised by Shivajians. On one instance Roopali defender Vinod More virtually played the ball to his opponent Satyajit Kakade, but was lucky as Thon Pau who picked up Satyajit's square pass went abeging.

Shivajians on the other hand settled in well and worked up attractive moves, to keep the Roopali defence on tenterhooks.

In one attack, Cedric Fernandes working in tandem with Thon beat defenders Balchandra Bhosale and Nitin Jorkar, but a soft release ending up in 'keeper Anup Jadhav's hands was all that materalised.

Roopali, for reasons better known to them, failed totally as a team and looked vulnerable. On the left, Newman time and again broke lose but was always a shade late when it came to deliverance.

Roopali at the other end had Bapu Raikar and Santosh Joshi do most of the running, but an alert defence in Sushil Joseph and Vijay Pillay kept them at bay. However, as humans err the defence at times did give in. Bapu in one attack, did well to outsmart Sushil and release a first-timer, which meant no harm as the 'keeper Prakash Rawat had the angle well covered.

Thereafter, a Bapu chipping from the right had Santosh, on the edge of the box, in the clear, but a timely retrievals yielding in a clearance by Playmore kept Santosh from taking a shot.

Minutes before the breather, Shivajians had the best chance of the half. Medio Giri Charles playing a through pass to Thon caught the entire defence on the wrong foot. However, Thon's cross, from the right, went in vain as Satyajit who moved in failed to keep his effort within the framework, with just the 'keeper to beat.

After a listless first half the second session decided Shivajians' fate. Shivajians first strike was the superb anticipatory header by Dal Pau into the right-corner of the net, following a neatly taken free-kick by Thon from the right.

Thereafter Shivajians sporadically raided their opponents goal. First Dal Pau, after getting the better of Santosh Joshi and Vinod More, was denied by the 'keeper, with a reflex action save and later effectively braved Newman's stiff try.

Shivajians doubled their advantage with a good combined move initiated by Dal, from just inside the Roopali half. Cedric picking up Dal's pass combined well with Newman with a first time passing sequence. A delayed out-step switch, enabled Newman release his attempt which found the net after the 'keeper failed to mark the angle.

Four minutes later Roopali pulled one back when Ashwin Mancharkar's flag-kick ended being accidentally handled by Nitin D'Souza, resulting in a penalty leaving Bapu to do the rest.

There will be no matches on April 2 owing to Good Friday.

Saturday's Fixtures: Deccan XI `A' vs Roopali S.C -- 4.00 p.m.
