SURAT, APRIL 2: The Christian community of Almodi village is apprehensive of the Easter celebrations being disrupted with Swami Aseemanand returning to this hotbed of communal politics in the Vyara taluka of the Dangs.Hindu fundamentalist groups have planned a meeting in the village on Good Friday, the day of mourning for the Christians.
Navsukhbhai, a resident of the village, says that after the Swami's visit, saffron flags have been put up all around the village. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) plans to hold a meeting right in front of Navsukhbhai's house, which is used to hold prayer service. He fears that the prayer service might be disrupted.
The village is just 10 km from the Swami's Waghai ashram, and after the Swami's followers reconverted many locals, the region has become a hotbed of communal activities.
The trouble started after one Ukadiyabhai reconverted in 1998. It was on his land that the Christians had built a prayer hall in 1985. Now, with him reconverting to Hinduism, non-Christiantribals have taken possession of the prayer hall. (This was on May 17, 1998) Christians have been demanding possession of the hall as it was built with donations from everyone. But Ukadiyabhai has put his foot down.
Since then the Christians have been holding the prayer service at Navsukhbhai's house. On Monday, the Swami, accompanied by two van-loads of workers, visited the village. He inspected the prayer hall. A tractor had been brought with them for levelling the ground to hold the meeting.
Navsukhbhai says, "To hold the meeting next to my house is provocative. It seems they want to create trouble," Navsukhbhai had come to Surat with seven other villagers to meet District Collector Sangeeta Singh to apprise her of the situation arising out of the Swami's visit to the village.
Singh said, "There won't be any problem. I will ask the District Superintendent of Police to take precaution." The Swami had been asked to leave the Dangs two months ago. He has resurfaced now, but some tribals say he had infact never left the village.
When VHP executive president Laljibhai Patel was asked about the flags put up in Almodi, he replied, "Saffron flats are not fluttering in Almodi alone but in all parts of the country."
