AURANGABAD, APRIL 2: A 30-year-old woman delivered a three-headed child at a private nursing home here last Friday. The child, a boy, was born with three heads attached to the main head, and instantly attracted onlookers. Citizens wended their way to the hospital for a glimpse of the deformity.Gynaecologist Dr Sunita Yelnare, who operated upon the woman, told UNI that this abnormal birth is a `meningoele or congenital defect' in medical terms.
The two excess organs developed in the womb from the very beginning, she said. Dr Yelnare said such cases were rare, with merely one or two detected in 10,000 pregnant women. She explained that the development of excess organs may be caused by medicinal overdoses during pregnancy, adding that such a deformity could have been prevented had regular check-ups been done by specialists.
Dr Yelnare said this was the third delivery of the woman, adding both the baby and the mother are doing fine. They were discharged on Monday on the parents' request despite thedoctors' opinion that the child would not live long. She said the excess parts of the head could be separated with an operation, which could be conducted in Mumbai. But the parents were not ready for the such an operation saying, ``Yeh to Allah ki dein hai''(this is God's gift).
She said when a woman gets pregnant, a sonography should be conducted within three months to confirm whether the foetus was growing normally. Medicines should not be taken without consulting doctors, she added.
