Match units to ignite a spark against child labour

UNITED NEWS OF INDIA
CHENNAI, APRIL 2: It's a campaign against child labour in Sivakasi in Tamil Nadu, but with a difference -- the campaign is by small-scale match industries themselves.

The campaign, commencing next month, would highlight the eradication of child labour six years ago in about 500 small-scale match units, owing allegiance to the All India Chamber of Match Industries, chamber president G Athipathy told newspersons here today.

He said the campaign would be in the form of a logo pasted on the reverse side of matchboxes produced by the units. The logo would consist of a smiling girl with a schoolbag and the declaration that ``Our children work at school,'' he added.

He claimed that more than 10,000 cottage units in the Sivakasi region still employed child labour but continued to be out of the purview of the Factories Act.
