Chelappa no more

MUMBAI, APRIL 4: PC Narayan, popularly known as Chelappa, a state-level basketball player and coach with Central Railway, died on March 23 in Chennai.

According to reports reaching here, Narayan had something to eat and suffered a bout of food poisoining. He slipped into coma and never came out of it. Narayan was 62 and is survived by his wife.

Narayan played for the Indian Gymkhana, the Matunga Athletic Club and then Central Railway in the early 1950s. Football Olympian SS Narayan, who also played basketball for Gymkhana, recalls his association with Narayan.

``He was a good two-handed shooter in those days. Though he was short he made a good impact with his shooting prowess.''

PC Narayan went on to captain Central Railway as a player. But he was better known for building the Central Railway basketball team. He was also known for his administrative skills.

``He was the most hard-working talent scout. If he knew of talented player, he would chase them till they join his team. He has shaped thecareers of over 50 such players,'' said MO Verghese, former Central Excise player.

PC Narayan had retired from Railways four years ago.
