NASHIK, APRIL 4: Leader of the Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) Medha Patkar has accused the Maharashtra Government of misguiding the court and demanded that a new tribunal be appointed to solve the problems faced by families displaced by the Sardar Sarovar Dam.Addressing a press conference and a public meeting here on Saturday night, Patkar alleged that the Government had misled the court by filing an affidavit that it was capable of rehabilitating all displaced people even if the height of the dam was increased to 110 metres. She said even families who had suffered the dam height of 80 metres were to be resettled and with the recent order to allow construction upto 85 metres more, families would be homeless.
She said the Maharashtra Government should reconsider its role in the Sardar Sarovar Project being jointly executed by Maharashtra, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh as the Maharashtra Government's share of benefits was insignificant.
She said Maharashtra had lost 10,600 hectares of jungles and 33 villagesand was on the verge of losing Rs 1,500 crore over the project.
Further, Maharashtra would be entitled only to 27 per cent of the power generated by the project, she said. The NBA had undertaken a `Manavadhikar Yatra' from Badwani (Madhya Pradesh) to Delhi via Mumbai. The yatra arrived in Nashik on Saturday with about 2,500 displaced tribals. On Monday, the yatra will reach Vidhan Bhavan, Mumbai. It will leave for Delhi, where an agitation has been planned beginning Wednesday.
The NBA has held agitations for the last 14 years on the issue. The height of the dam had been frozen at 80 metres by the Supreme Court in 1995. On February 18, the court vacated the stay and allowed upto 85 metres of construction.
She called for the setting up of a new tribunal to rehabilitate the displaced families.
