Pune municipality takes up border villages' water woes

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, APRIL 4: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is apparently doing all that it can to ensure a regular supply of water at the 38 peripheral villages which were merged with the civic body. ``Be it tankers, borewells, pumps and even installing water pipelines, the PMC has undertaken the work on a war footing at its expanded area.''

Additional City Engineer (water supply) V G Dhadphale told The Indian Express on Friday that 35 spots have been identified which will be supplied water via tankers. Tankers will have to make at least two trips daily to each of the spots such as Wadgaonsheri, Kharadi, Chandannagar, Lohegaon, Warje, Bhusari Colony, Baner, Balewadi, Bawdhan, Satavwadi, Kondhwa, Dhankawadi and Ambegaon among others, to supply a total of seven lakh litres of water. Each tanker has a capacity of storing 10,000 litres of water.

The Ground Survey Development Authority (GSDA) will also carry out a survey to locate the water source to install borewells. Tenders have already been floated forinstallation of 25 borewells, while 20 spare pumps of varying HP -- in the range of 10-25 -- have been placed at Parvati water works as a standby measure. The old pumps have been repaired, while pumps worth Rs 2.5 lakh have been purchased, Dhadphale said.

While short-term measures have been launched to ensure that residents of the peripheral villages -- already facing the sweltering heat -- do not face water woes during the hot summer months of April-May, the PMC will also install the rising main (main water pipeline) at Bavdhan on Sunday.

The project will cost Rs 20 lakh and will take a month to be completed. Similarly, a water pipeline costing Rs 8 lakh will be laid at Baner, while another one will be installed at Sukhsagarnagar which will be operational within a fortnight, Dhadphale added.

PMC plan

The PMC has to prepare the development plan of the 38 peripheral villages merged with the PMC on September 11, 1997, within four years. India International Infrastructure Engineers Ltd wasappointed a consultant for the project. The information gathered from surveys of infrastructure, traffic and transportation, demographic profile, housing and shelter will be converted into an electronic format.
