ACB arrests traffic copA traffic constable was arrested by the Anti- Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Saturday for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 1,200 from a taxi driver.According to the police, on April 2, Ashok Pathak, the driver of taxi MH-01-J-493, had parked his vehicle at Crawford Market. At 10 am, constable Baban Gopal Wagh, (39) attached to the Traffic Control branch, detained the taxi on the ground that the vehicle's fitness certificate was not valid. Wagh also did not issue Pathak a memo. The taxi's owner, Manojkumar Pandey, later approached Wagh and asked him to return the taxi. Wagh demanded a bribe of Rs 2,000, which Pandey expressed his inability to pay. Wagh then told Pandey to hand over Rs 1,200 to one Mukta Bandu Malekar, who runs a canteen adjacent to the chowky. Instead, Pandey approached the ACB, whose officials laid a trap and arrested Wagh and Malekar on the spot.
Donation to eye hospital
The Diwaliben Mohanlal Mehta Charitable Trust donated Rs 15 lakh to the K BHaji Bachooali Charitable Opthalmic & ENT Hospital, Parel recently. Founded in 1914 in the midst of textile area of Lalbaug and Parel the hospital offers free/subsidised eye care to common man. The cheque of Rs 15 lakh was handed over by Ashwinbhai Mehta on behalf of the trust.
