Man killed: Wife, nephew jailed for life

  • Additional Sessions Judge J W Singh recently sentenced a woman and her nephew to life imprisonment for conspiring to murder her husband. According to the prosecution, Bale Gowda, a truck cleaner, lived with his wife Shilavati and daughter in a hutment in Dharavi. His nephew Lokesh Gowda began visiting his uncle and aunt, and Lokesh reportedly started having an affair with Shilavati.

Shilavati and Lokesh plotted to kill Gowda, said the prosecution. On March 17, 1995, the duo took Gowda to Hotel Shangrila at Vile Parle, and after getting him drunk in a hotel room, strangulated him with a nylon rope and escaped. Gowda died on the spot, and the duo confessed to the crime after they were picked up by the police for questioning.

Special Public Prosecutor Shafi Shaikh said the entire case was based on circumstantial evidence as there were no eye-witnesses. The evidence of the hotel employees helped establish that Shilavati and Lokesh had been seen leavingthe hotel premises.

    WR services disrupted

  • The down main line of the Western Railway was blocked this afternoon following a derailment of a goods train between Virar and Vaitarna stations.

According to the railway control, five bogies of a goods train separated at 1.15 pm due to which local trains on the western line were running behind schedule while the outstation trains on the main line had to be diverted due to the blockage of the main line. However, no train was cancelled so far and no casualty was reported due to derailment.
