EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
SURAT, April 4: Lok Samarpan Raktadan Kendra (LSRK), a Surat-based charitable organisation, collected 2451 bottles of blood in its blood donation camp organised today. With more than 8000 people donating blood, Dr Jivaraj Dankhara, LSRK president was sure that the kendra would enter the Guinness Book of World Records. A senior official of Limca Book of records had also assured that LSRK's record would be incorporated in the new edition of the book, he added.

The blood donation camp, which began at 7 am at the Saurashtra Bhavan, was formally inaugurated by film star Jitendra at 10 am with burning of Mashal.

Though 7384 people had donated blood by 4.15 pm, long queues were seen on both the gates of Bhavan. Some of those standing in the queue told this reporter that they had been waiting for their turn for last the three hours. ``More than 15,000 people had turned up. But we had to request them to go home as we had achieved our target,'' claimed camp in-charge Arvind Kakadia.

Overwhelmed by the enthusiasm of donors Jitendra said,``I have seen queues of ration, kerosene but never at any blood donation camp.''

According to Dankhara, the idea behind organising such a camp was to popuralise voluntary blood donation as only 28 per cent of total requirement of blood in the country was being fulfilled through voluntary donation.

The new building of LSRK, constructed at a cost of Rs one crore, was inaugurated on the occasion.

Aprat from 150 doctors from Varachha and Katargam area, 120 teachers, 80 students of Data Bank Computer Education, 70 laboratory technicians, 50 medical students and 200 volunteers, officials from 24 blood banks from Mahrashtra and Gujarat were also present during the camp.

According to information, LSRK had adopted Civil Hospital which would be provided 200 bottle of blood every month. ``Right now LSRK can preserve only 1200 bottles of blood. But we have decided to export a modern equipment which will increase the capacity by 800,'' said Dankhara.
