Two teenaged boys run over by train

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHANDIGARH, April 4: Two teenagers were killed after they were run over by the Chandigarh-bound Himalayan Queen Express here today. While Rajinder Kumar (16) died on the spot, Ardeep (14) succumbed to his injuries at the PGI. Both were residents of Daria village here.

Rajinder's younger brother, Varun, who saw the accident, said he was among 20-odd boys from Daria and Mauli Jagran villages, who were playing cricket this morning at a ground just behind the Railway Station. It was around 10.45 a.m. that Rajinder and Ardeep went to drink water from the station which is just a few metres from the playground.

Varun said the train was fast approaching as the two boys crossed the track. Rajinder fell on the track and Ardeep tried to pull him towards himself. However, the train rolled over Rajinder dragging him along, partially masserating the body. The train also hit Ardeep, tossing him several feet from the track. Injured Ardeep was rushed to the PGI where he died in the evening.

Rajinder had appeared in Class X exams in the Sector 28 Government Model School; Ardeep had taken Class VIII examinations at Moti Ram Senior Secondary School in Sector 27 here.

When the Government Railway Police (GRP) reached the spot after about half an hour, they saw a severed head near the track. The injured had already been moved to the hospital. GRP Police Post in-charge Jagir Singh said Rajinder and Ardeep apparently did not see the approaching train. An engine was standing on the up-line and the boys may not have realised that a train was coming on the down-line. They may have supposed that the whistle was given by the stationary engine.

Daria residents say children and youngsters from Daria and Mauli Jagran villages regularly play on the ground near the tracks. They also come down to the station for water, after crossing the tracks. The railway track on which the accident occurred is between the two villages.
