SC/ST quota in PGI faculty jobs to top agenda

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHANDIGARH, April 4: With the meeting of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research scheduled for April 6, speculations regarding the issue of Schedule Caste/Schedule Tribe reservation in faculty jobs have increased.

The governing body which will meet for the first time after its constitution will be chaired by Union Health Minister Dalit Izahmalai. Local MP Satya Pal Jain, Adviser Jagdish Sagar, Panjab University Vice-Chancellor M.M. Puri, besides PGI Director Dr B.K. Sharma and two members of the faculty will attend the meeting.

The issue of the SC/ST reservation in faculty is learnt to be the major issue on the agenda of the governing body. With further discussions on the issue, speculation among the faculty members have risen whether the filling of vacant posts at the institute will be possible even now when the bodies have been formed after a gap of two years.

"The Supreme Court has already given a decision that a single cadre post cannot be reserved since it amounts to 100 per cent reservation of the post, which is unconstitutional.

If any other decision is taken which is not acceptable to us the whole thing might end up in a court again delaying the fulfilment of the posts," said a senior faculty member.
