Fourteen year old takes own life, `it was exam depression'

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, April 4: A 14-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan in her house in Sangam Vihar this afternoon. Though she did not leave behind a suicide note, the girl's parents have reportedly told the police that she had failed to get through her annual examination recently.

Today, around 1.30 p.m., a neighbour spotted Pooja hanging, with a sari wound around her neck, from the ceiling fan. The neighbour, Ramwati, had come visiting to the B-block house. After finding the door locked from the inside, she looked in through a window.

Ramwati then alerted other residents in the area, who broke open the door with the help of the local police. Pooja was taken to a local hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.

Pooja's parents were away at that time. Her father Sarvesh, an employee at a printing press, had left for work in the morning. And her mother had gone to a nearby market.

According to the police, Pooja's mother later said that her daughter was depressed for some after she failed to get through her annual class VIII examination. ``Pooja had told her mother not to mention this to her father. Besides, Pooja was also not doing very well in her studies for some time and was often taunted by her classmates because of this. The pressure probably got to her,'' the official adds.
