NEW DELHI, April 4: Residents of Sonia Vihar jhuggis in north-east Delhi set a truck on fire and blocked traffic for half an hour, after the vehicle ran over a 12-year-old boy.At 5 p.m., the truck with Uttar Pradesh registration plates and loaded with bricks, was seen speeding through the area. Amit Singh, 12, was playing with some friends on the roadside. Eyewitnesses recall that the vehicle suddenly swerved sharply and hit Amit, crushing him under the front wheels. He was taken to GTB hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. Minutes after the incident an angry mob surrounded the vehicle. But the truck driver, Jabbar Singh, and his helper managed to escape. The mob smashed the windows of the vehicle, damaged the bricks on the truck and set it afire.
For almost 30 minutes, traffic movement came to a standstill. The mob cleared the road, only after the police assured them that they would arrest the truck driver. Jabbar Singh and his helper were tracked down a little later. They have been booked for rash and negligent driving and under Section 304A of the Indian Penal Code (causing death due to negligence).
