NEW DELHI, April 4: Promising her government's support in making Compressed Natural Gas or CNG -- the clean fuel -- readily available in the city, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today handed over the keys to the 100th CNG Ambassador to a customer.Appreciating the efforts made by Hindustan Motors, she said that her government was committed to reducing pollution levels in the city and would ensure that all the city's buses were running on CNG or propane by 2000.
Highlighting the need for an eco-friendly fuel option, C.K. Birla, chairman of Hindustan Motors, pointed out that with the pollution level reaching such alarming highs, CNG was a necessity and not an option.Birla also felt that the government would pay more attention to the problems of the consumers and make it a popular option. Taxi drivers, who have shifted to CNG-fitted cars, who were also present on the occasion, pointed out that the government needs to look into the finer aspects in this regard. Punjab Singh, who was the first taxi driver to buy a CNG-fitted ambassador said that though it was cheaper, they had a lot of problems in buying the gas.
