CBI workshop on crime against women

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, April 4: The Central Bureau of (CBI) Investigation is organising a workshop in the Capital tomorrow. Participants will discuss measures to combat rape and other forms of sexual assault. The one-day workshop, sponsored by the Department of Women and Child Development (DWCD) and the National Commission for Women (NCW), is expected to throw up proposals for reforms in the Criminal Justice System. These reforms, according to a senior CBI official, will hopefully prove to be a deterrent against sexual assault.

``Besides sensitising police officials and building awareness towards the latest developments, it will also suggest a future course of action with respect to policing, in curbing crime against women,'' the official added.

Union Women and Child Development Minister Uma Bharti will inaugurate the workshop. The discussion will be moderated by Union Home Secretary B P Singh.

The first session, to be chaired by Women and Child Development Secretary Kiran Aggarwal, will cover deliberations on the present scenario and recent developments in investigation and prosecution.

Former Chief Justice of India A.M. Ahmadi will head the second session on existing laws and legal reform of rape and sexual assault laws. NCW chairperson Vibha Parthasarathi will preside over the business session, which will focus on the issue of sexual harassment at workplaces.

CBI Director R.K. Raghavan and National Human Rights Commission member Justice Malimath will be among the speakers at the seminar to be attended by lawyers, forensic experts, psychiatrists, non-governmental organisations, prosecutors and judicial officers.
