Sound start for Shubika

MUMBAI, APRIL 4: Shubika Bilkha capped her maiden title and an award for the most promising player of the Sanghi Inter-club squash tournament at the Cricket Club of India courts today.

The only daughter of former Indian Test batsman Yajuvinder Singh beat Natasha Lall 2-9, 9-7, 9-7, 9-3 in the under-15 final. The player of the tournament award entitles her to expenses worth Rs 25,000 and air fare to participate in tournaments in south-east Asia. The Bombay Scottish student, who turns 15 on April 20, defeated Shaila Pandole yesterday and received a walkover from Alisha Mashruwala in the four-player league.

Boys' under-19: Parth Doshi bt Abhijit Kukreja 9-7, 9-6, 3-9, 9-6; Under-17: Junaid Nathani bt Mahesh Verma 9-5, 9-4, 9-5; Under-15: Siddharth Suchde bt Mihir Sheth 9-3, 9-5, 9-4; Under-13: Karanpal Sethi bt Rishabh Singhvi 9-0, 1-9, 10-8, 9-1.

Girls under-19: Deepali Anvekar bt Rhea Bhandare 9-3, 9-2, 9-0; Under-15: Shubika Bilkha bt Natasha Lall 2-9, 9-7, 9-7, 9-3.

IOCLtriumph

Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) won the Wills Merchant Cup, when they beat Wills XI in the seven-a-side cricket tournament (5 overs) conducted by Bombay Gymkhana here today. The winner received cash prize of Rs 25,000 while the runner-up received Rs 15,000.

Final: Wills XI 53-0 (Vinod Raghavan 23 not out, Bharat Karnik 22 not out) lost to IOC 54-1 (Amit Dani 27 not out, Vinayak Samant 20 not out); (SF): Wills XI 51-5 bt Air-India 43-1; Sun-Grace 41-6 (Hemant Kinikar 3-4, including hat-trick) lost IOC 42-2.
