CHANDIGARH, April 4: "Visiting my grandfather's house in Jalandhar's Basti Nau was a dream come true", reminisced Seema Khan, wife of Majid Khan, the former captain of the Pakistan cricket team. Majid Khan along with other former Pakistan players were in the city with their families on the invitation of the Punjab Cricket Association to play in the series of four friendly matches in Punjab. They played against the Punjab Cricket Club XI at the PCA Stadium in SAS Nagar today. These players belong to one family: they are the members of the Lahore-based Zaman Park Cricket Club and trace their roots to Jalandhar. The building that now houses the Guru Nanak Dev University College in Basti Nau originally belonged to the maternal grandfather of Seema Khan. It was declared refugee property after partition. "I have come to India so many times but never had a chance to visit this part of the country where my ancestors lived and where I spent my childhood," said Seema. "It must have been so hard for them to leave the place, after all they were settled here for 300 years," mused Anna Maria Khan, wife of Umar Zaman Khan.
"The place has changed so much," said Seema who remembered spending time in the bastis. "In those days the system in the bastis was very secure and comfortable for the womenfolk," said Anna Maria, who had heard stories from her parents and grandparents about the predominantly Muslim bastis in Jalandhar. "They tell me that the buildings were constructed in such a manner that women could interact with other women freely; they observed purdah but rarely had to don a burqa. I was so much looking forward to visiting the place that I actually jumped at the idea of this visit to India," she said.
Talking about Indian fashions, the women agreed that Pakistani women certainly take inspiration from India -- "Hindi movies are the main conduit for new fashion trends," they said. Myda, who went on a shopping spree in the city, showed off her prize a double-shaded suit piece similar to saris worn by the actress Urmila Matondkar in Aflatoon. "She wore double-shaded saris in one of the movie's song sequences. I couldn't find it in Pakistan but today when I spotted it, I grabbed it!" "I didn't find much of difference in the fashion scene in India and Pakistan," said Anna Maria.
Observing that "platform heels and other fashion accessories are the same on both sides of the border. We stitch our salwars differently, that's all." How differently? "Well basically it's just that your gehras are wider than ours ...." Meanwhile, in a exhibition match played at the PCA Stadium today, Zaman Cricket Club (Pakistan) lost to PCA XI by 4-wicket.
Ahmed Shah (36) and Majid Khan (30) took the pakistan total to 156 in the allotted 40 overs, losing seven wickets.
In reply, PCA XI got the target in 36 overs.
