Students get tough with Shah, bar his entry into university

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
SURAT, April 5: The tussle between president of South Gujarat College and University Teachers' Association president Suryakant Shah and authorities took an ugly turn when Shah was prevented from entering the university premises by a group of students, who abused and roughed him up on Monday.

Shah, who is also a Syndicate member, could attend the meeting only when he was provided police protection. While no other Syndicate member was prevented from entering, Shah faced the wrath of students, who claimed he was holding the university to ransom by giving a call for the boycott of examinations to ensure that the punishment handed out to him was withdrawn.

Vice-chancellor Prem Kumar Sharda had relieved Shah of all the positions he held on the statutory bodies, and ruled that he won't be given any examination-related work.

Shah, by virtue of being the association president, ensured that its members rallied around him and was able to seek their support. A meeting of teachers called a couple of days ago, dubbed the action against Shah unjustified and rather harsh.

While Shah claimed that the threat of boycotting examination work was never aired, students maintained otherwise. Monday's Syndicate meeting was called in view of the teachers' stand on the issue. The meeting began on time, but Shah was not allowed to enter for more than an hour by students who had gathered at the main gate.

Shouting slogans denouncing Shah, they also roughed him up and abused other teachers, who had gathered there to gherao Syndicate members to press for withdrawal of action against their president. The students called him names as also female teachers. Scores of teachers sat on dharna in the premises to protest against the treatment meted out to them and the role played by the police.

Before Shah could attend the meeting, the Syndicate was adjourned for 15 minutes after passing a resolution criticising Shah's utterances he allegedly made at the teachers' meeting. Assessment remuneration was raised at the meeting.

Shah entered the meeting hall under police protection and submitted a memorandum to the vice-chancellor claiming that he was being victimised at the instance of a few members. It demanded that action against Shah be revoked.

The students also submitted a memorandum saying that they apprehended boycott of examinations by teachers. The teachers on their part decided to welcome the V-C with black badges on his visits to colleges.
