April 5: Explosive batsman Sanath Jayasuriya and controversial off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan were included on return from injury lay-offs as defending champions Sri Lanka announced an experienced 15-member squad for the cricket World Cup in England from May 14 to June 20.Seasoned middle-order bat Roshan Mahanama returned after being overlooked for the recent Triangular Series in India and left-hander Hashan Tillekeratne was retained while Kumara Dharmasena, the controversial off-spinner whose action has been reported to ICC has been omitted.
The team, to be led by Arjuna Ranatuna was finalised by the selectors and announced by the Sri Lankan board today.
Jayasuriya was recovering from a wrist fracture he suffered during a Triseries tie against Australia in January. Muralitharan, who was the centre of a storm on that tour after he was no-balled by controversial Australian umpire Darrel Hair despite the world body clearing his action, had undergone a surgery to his bowling shoulder.
Both weredeclared fit and Jayasuriya made a breezy 90 in 110 balls at a club match here yesterday to convince the selectors. Mahanama and Tillekeratne were surprise inclusions as they were not part of the shortlisted 18 players. They came in for young batsmen Russel Arnold and Avishka Gunawardena.
The team:
Arjuna Ranatunga (capt), Aravinda de Silva (vice-capt), Sanath Jayasuriya, Maravan Atapattu, Mahela Jayawardena, Roshan Mahanama, Romesh Kaluwitharana, Hashan Tillekeratne, Muttiah Muralitharan, Chaminda Vaas, Promodaya Wickremasinghe, Eric Upashantha, Upul Chandana, Chandika Hathurasinghe and Ruwan Kalpage.
