Maiden success for South Korea
South Korea beat Canada 5-2 today in a fast-moving game in Ninth Sultan Azlan Shah Cup tournament at Malaysia's National Hockey Stadium. Former Asian Games champion South Korea had been defeated 3-4 by Germany and 2-6 by Pakistan in the six-nation competition. It was Canada's second loss in three matches after being bettered by Pakistan 3-6 and edging out Malaysia 2-1.

Jeon Jong Ha put the Koreans into the lead early, scoring in the sixth minute when he connected a penalty corner rebound for the only goal of the first half.

Song Seung Tae broke away from a tight mid-field to score the second goal through a solo run in the 39th minute. Lee Young Hwang added the third goal in the 49th minute.

Fan shot dead
Rio de janeiro: A Brazilian football fan died after being shot in the head before the Rio derby match between Flamengo and Fluminense.Bruno Pereira Lirio, 20, was killed when battles broke out between rival fans on the way to the legendaryMaracana stadium.

Kern hat-trick
Lagos: Striker Enrico Kern scored a hat-trick as Germany demolished Paraguay 4-0 in the World Youth Championship Sunday , while Argentina began the defence of their crown with an unremarkble 1-0 win over Kazakhstan.

Other results: Australia bt Saudi Arabia 3-1; Nigeria drtew Costa Rica 1-1; Ghana drew Croatia 1-1; Mexico bt Ireland 1-0.

Atherton's fits
London: Michael Atherton has hit out at the swift manner in which he was axed from England's World Cup squad due to back injury, insisting he should have been given more time to prove his fitness.
