Alleged castrater surrenders; sent to Sabarmati jail

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
AHMEDABAD, April 7: The `doctor' who allegedly castrated his wife's former friend surrendered to the police on Wednesday and has been remanded in judicial custody. He joined his wife in Sabarmati Central Jail.

Ashwin Gajjar's wife Rajshree was arrested on Tuesday. However, Nizamuddin, who is married to Rajshree's sister and had assisted the castration, is absconding.

Police said Gajjar was a registered medical practitioner, not trained in any government-recognised system of medicine. According to his confession, Gajjar had made an attempt to castrate Pravin Patel, a former colleague of his wife, who ``had attacked her in the past''. He said he had done this to settle score for the attack.

However, confusion prevails. Doctors treating Patel have refused to comment on his condition: some reports say his penis had been completely severed, some that only his foreskin had been cut. The police is still awaiting a medical report.
