SURAT, April 7: The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) plans to set up two biogas Plants for power generation under the national programme on energy recovery from urban, municipal and industrial waste.To be built at an estimated cost of Rs 248 lakh, the ministry of non-conventional energy sources would provide 50 per cent financial assistance, while the remaining cost of the project would be borne by the SMC. According to SMC Advisor P C Shah, with setting up of the plant, SMC would be the first civic body in the country to generate power at Sewage Treatment Plant on such a high scale.
To be set up at the Anjana Sewage treatment unit, the first plant is expected to be built at an estimated cost of Rs 182.40 lakh which will generate 15,300 units of power and completed by the end of this year. While, at present the power consumption at Anjana is 8000 units, the surplus power, Shah said, would be utilised for pumping station and street lights.
After the Anjana Plant is commissioned, the SMC will set up another plant at Bhesan Sewage Treatment Plant. SMC is likely to save Rs 75 lakh annually when both the Plants are commissioned.
