MUMBAI, APRIL 7: Talent has been recognised at last.Hockey Olympian Gavin Ferreira and Mumbai Ranji Trophy cricketer Amol Muzumdar, who were for long in contention for the State's highest sporting honour, finally found recognition for their exploits when the annual Shiv Chhatrapati Awards for the year of 1997-98 were announced this morning. While talented long-distance swimmer Rupali Repale was in for a pleasant ``surprise'', Muzumdar, Ferreira and international hockey coach Satinder Walia expressed their delight when contacted by The Indian Express this evening.
Amol Muzumdar: The Award has come at just the right moment. It's a big boost considering the fact that Mumbai cricket underwent a lean period last season. This recognition has instilled in me a fresh eagerness for the forthcoming season. It's really pleasing to receive such a prestigious honour. My parents are even more delighted.
Rupali Repale: The Award has come as a surprise. To be honest, I wasn't expecting it. After the Directorate ofSports secretary Suresh Salvi asked my father to fill the form this year too, I just slept over it. In fact, it was my father who completed the formalities. Last year too, I applied for the award but was denied on the grounds that sea-swimming was not a sport, but an adventure sport.
Gavin Ferreira: I'm delighted. I think, I deserved the Award a few years back. Nevertheless, better late than never. They (the Sports Directorate) were probably confused on the number of Nationals I had played.Satinder Singh Walia: My services to the game has been appreciated. I wasn't aiming for it, but it's an honour and one to be cherished.
