CHANDIGARH, April 11: ``The celebration at Anandpur Sahib is an extraordinarily important occasion and it is extremely important for me to represent my country at the celebration for we have a large Sikh community in Britain which has reached the top in almost all walks of life. And Sikhs are an important element in improving the relationship between India and Britain.''British High Commissioner, Sir Rob Young, said this to Chandigarh Newsline as he, accompanied by Lady Catherine Young, arrived in the city en route to Anandpur Sahib, where they will share the dais with the high commissioners of Canada and Australia tomorrow. Sir Young carries the message from his Prime Minister Tony Blair to be read out on the occasion.
Praising the tolerance and humaneness of Sikh religion, Blair has noted, ``My vision is a society where every individual, regardless of colour, creed or race has the same opportunities... and Sikhs contribute much to today's multi-cultural society.''
But why is it that in the relationship between India and Britain there exists a feeling of something lacking? ``It is a unique relationship and based more on mutual goodwill. More than at the official level, it is through the inter-relationship of the people of the two countries, partly because of the strong Indian community there and partly due to our enormous and inseparable history.
