Govt `allowing' direct wheat purchase
Patiala: The Federation of Arhtiya Associations of Punjab today alleged that the state government has reportedly indicated in the markets of Fazilka and Abohar that direct purchase of wheat from farmers would be allowed. Resenting the state government's reported move, Bal Krishan Singla, president of the federation, in a statement here today, said that the association along with farmers would protest if the government followed this policy. The policy would eliminate the role of arhtiyas on one hand and farmers would be left at the mercy of inspectors which would lead to undue harassment and encourage corruption, he alleged. Singla said that the Uttar Pradesh government has a direct purchase system and farmers there were getting less floor price than Punjab farmers. The Chief Minister had assured a deputation of the federation that no such policy would be introduced, he added.

Excellence award for Garg
Patiala: Dr Naresh Garg has been selected for excellence award by the Institute of Economic Studies for his contribution to the field of medical science in the country. According to an institute communique, the award and gold medal would be presented to him at a special function on April 21.
