Another clash in Kolhapur

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
KOLHAPUR, April 11: In yet another incident of group clash, five persons were injured and 10 houses damaged in Sudhakar Joshi Nagar here yesterday.

Juna Rajwada police today arrested six persons in connection with two incidents of rioting which took place in Sudhakar Joshi Nagar slum colony on Thursday night and last morning. A large number of women also participated in the streetfight last morning.

Police inspector Prakash Limaye told The Indian Express that rioting incidents were the result of petty dispute, as Shivaji Gurav, (the complainant in the first incident of rioting on Thursday night) was talking to former corporator Pandurang Adsule, which one of the accused did not like.

Acting on Gurav's complaint the police arrested six persons - Bajrang Mahajan, Shivaji Shete, Tanaji Shete, Manjunath Kamble, Hanumant Gadivadar and Prashant Kurne. Three women were also arrested in connection with the retaliatory attack carried out on Friday morning. They include Basavva Londhe, Chimana Sakat and Alka Sakat.

This is second such incident within a month, when mobs of two rival groups have struck terror in their localities.

The first incident took place in March, when groups owing allegiance to former corporator Sambhaji Basugade and sitting corporator Dhanaji Amte struck at each other during the night, terrorising residents of Uttreshwar, Dudhali and Gol Circle areas of the city. Ironically just few days back, a peace march led by former MLA's Babuarao Dharwade, Ravindra Sabnis and general secretary of CPI state unit Govind Pansare, had appealed the people in the affected areas not to lose patience and calm.
